I drew this charcoal portrait of my friend Mikey when I started to get back into drawing after having taken some time off for school. His eyes had a peculiar reflection from the object he was looking at when taking the original reference photo. I tried to capture the object in the reflection from his eyes because it made for an interesting use of my lighter charcoal colors.
Drawing his hair was my favorite part of this project. The hair on his head had a different texture from his eyebrows, mustache, and beard which made it challenging, but also fun to work with. This portrait is one of my latest installments in drawing with black and white charcoal. It is interesting to work with both colors of the same medium because they create a wonderful contrast in the photo.
